Outside the Comic Book Haters' Studio #1: Johnny Ryan

At long last, the Comic Book Haters have taken a step away from their usual haunting ground, the Funnybook Dungeon, for a look at the outside world. For this, the first installment of "Outside the Comic Book Haters' Studio," a very special guest has graciously agreed to field their ridiculous questions.
Johnny Ryan, creative mastermind behind Angry Youth Comics, took time from his presumably busy schedule to chat it up with DJ Sloofus and Schooly G. Ryan's work harkens back to the "Glory Days" of the independent comics scene, and stands as a stark contrast to the myriad "sissy books" which are plaguing the market these days. Click here to witness this groundbreaking moment. Please support Johnny is all of his endeavors, no matter what your sature in life may be.

I don't know why you guys can't grow up and actually interview someone with something to say. Like that woman that draws Cathy. Or some angry lesbian cartoonists. Or some critically-acclaimed foreign graphic novelists who can't speak English.

Now that would be real journalism.

Boys:

I don't pay you to sit around, talking on the phone to some hoighty-toighty comic book 'artiste.' In fact, I don't pay you at all. Get your shit together, or you'll soon find yourselves writing bit-jokes for those slack-jawed losers at Podcast X. Next time you plan on 'interviewing' someone, think about how those 3 wives of yours will feel waiting in the bread lines again. And absolutely NO MORE ALCOHOL until further notice.

Sincerely,
The Boss

You can pick through Ryan's work and find funny cartoons like the 'shit soup' cartoon posted on your blog, but for the most part his work is clumsy, unpleasant shit. No discernible jokes, just a desire to 'shock'- a dead end if there ever was one.

I would suggest interviewing someone of real substance. Funny substance. How about Tony Millionaire, KAZ, Michael Kupperman, or John Kerschbaum. Any of these men has been as weird, disgusting and twisted as Johnny Ryan has been, but they'be been funny at the same time. It's not the same old shit joke over and over.

well, anonymous, if that is your real name, i thought johnny ryan was a pretty cool interview.

i hate comics, and i thought the all-gag issue of AYC was fucking hilarious.

all the fine fellows you mentioned- it's all the same. your artificial distinction between these other "shocking" or "twisted" artists seems strange to me.

so, in closing, your artists of "real substance" might be my pissboys and their work is my shit paper, just as you dislike Johnny Ryan's stuff.

But thanks for listening!
Sincerely,
Schooly G

PS- I have no idea about any of those dudes you mentioned. Hells Yeah!

Hey Anonymous:

I'd like to have a chat with just about everyone on your list, and some of your points about Ryan are valid. Maybe he is just trying to shock for the sake of shocking, but so what? THey can't all be home runs, and I laugh out loud at least a few times at every issue of AYC. Ryan is alright in our book, and that's all there is to it.

P.S. I would really like to speak with Kershbaum, but I haven't seen anything he's done since Wiggly Reader #3.
