An Open Letter to Joanna Draper Carlson
To see what's left of this discussion, navigate on over to her blog. Feel free to throw in your two cents, but if it's not Pro-Joanna, don't expect it to stick around too long.
Joanna:You've got a lot of nerve. You make a living (or spend a great deal of your spare time) publicly criticizing comics, yet you cry foul as soon as someone dares criticize your reviews. You strike me as a coward, especially since you've deleted every comment which Rick posted on your site. Why isn't he allowed to voice his opinion?
I'm sure you'll delete this post as well, proving that your claims of an open forum are pretty much hollow promises. For your information, The Comic Book Haters is a comedy show, even though it's rarely funny. You have your fans who enjoy your writing, and that's fine, but learn to take the good with the bad. You claim to be looking for 'Honest Communication,' but it seems like you only allow those who support your limited view to voice their opinions.

I'm going to be completely honest here- all joking aside. The type of attitude displayed and encouraged by Ms. Draper-Carlson and various other regular posters on her site really drives people away from comics.
I am a total outsider when it comes to this culture and it seems to me that I am one of the few that can see that the emperor has no clothes.
One of the reasons that I have always found the culture of comics distasteful was the behavior and attitude of many of its outspoken supporters. Maybe it's not a majority of fans, but it certainly is a vociferous segment.
I think this type of attitude is prevalent among many different types of observers and critics of art and culture, but it just seems particularly nasty when comic book people turn on their own kind.
Maybe it comes from the fact that comics have been marginalized for so long that the people that have a voice in the comic industry or criticism field feel that they want to get in on the action too. Perhaps it's an unconcious desire- but make no mistake, this attitude marginalizes your own group.
Don't take everything so goddamned seriously. They're FUNNYBOOKS, for christ's sake. Step back. Take a deep breath. Kiss a girl (or guy), pet a dog, fuck a monkey- whatever. Just loosen your sphincter for a bit and enjoy shit in life.
Don't be so fucking serious about this shit- they're comic books. I don't mean that in a negative way.
Sorry for being so long-winded. We now return you to your scheduled hating.

You do realize that Rick deleted all his own comments. That's why it says, you know, "This post has been removed by the author" every place he posted.
You're assuming we actually read that crap.

Ed- I mean no disrespect- but are you one of those "I read more comics than you so I have street-cred" kind of cunts?
Disregarding whether or not Rick deleted all of his own posts, Ms. Draper-Carlson and her ilk are taking this far too seriously.
So one guy on the vastness of the internet calls this chick on her bullshit. GET THE FUCK OVER IT.
I'm going over to your blog to crap all over it. See you there.

I saved the long response for my spot (I'm greedy like that), but this part, I'll crosspost:
In the context of your blogmate's post, though, it isn't. When he wrote, "Carlson responded with a vicious attack, and went so far as to delete every attempt Rick made to justify his position on her blog," he was incorrect--Rick deleted his own posts. Whether or not anyone is taking anything too seriously isn't the question--the post lacked factual support, which is why I responded to that part of it, not your opinions on the matter.
Sorry, I didn't know it was a fucking thesis paper, Professor.

Well, now you do. And knowing is half the battle. Go Joes!
Out of respect for Schooly (who happens to be a huge G.I. Joe fan, and also slightly retarded) I'll absolve you with that comment. Be on the lookout for an upcoming "Comic Book Haters" podcast focusing on Marvel's 1980's G.I. Joe series.
