INTERNET, USA: Shitsville, NJ. The Comic Book Haters Partnership Organization Group announced earlier this evening that it would soon be offering up a new, exciting form of podcast interactionship. Yet another 'special' will see distrubution to honor an unknown landmark. "It's a real treat," said a member of the inner board. When asked about the veracity of the situation, he later replied "I can honestly say, these boys have blown away all the stops for this one. I mean it. Really. Stop laughing."
Though the exact nature of the project remains unknown, even by the producers, a few facts have surfaced. First, the next episode marks the crew's 150th endeavor. To kick off season two of their special Video Indie Spotlight, the Comic Book Haters got drunk. Whilst drinking the CBH crew perused the most recent edition of MOME, the super-artsy anthology from Fantagraphics Publishing. DJ Sloofus, Schooly G, and Umbrellaman all chipped in their two cents worth, giving this episode a total value of approximately seven cents (with a margin of error of 1 cent per individual involved). In addition to a new season, we're also debuting a new file type. Instead of the measly MPEG format, the show has switched over to the mighty AVI. This means better resolution, full-screen quality, and an incompatability with Apple's iPod. This fall, the Comic Book Haters popular video episode series, titled "The Comic Book Haters Indie Video Spotlight," will return. Each episode will feature a full-color visualization of the CBH team reviewing the periodical in question. Titles must fall under a loose "independent" umbrella, which includes basically anything ever printed in the comic book format.
The first season, which ran from spring to summer of 2008, dealt primarily with "character development and recognizability of the situationship between them," according to a press release from series co-creator DJ Sloofus. The exact details are as-yet unreleased, but it is believed another three-episode season will be produced. When approached for comment, Schooly G said, "I wasn't even approached for a comment; why would I give a fuck?" The new season of HTV will begin airing this September on the Comic Book Haters podcast network association.

Funnybook Wordbook Review #7: The 10 Cent Plague

While bored in North Carolina recently, I finally finished reading David Hajdu's new account of the comic-book "witch hunt" of the 1950s. All in all, it presented a pretty good overview of the senate subcommittee hearings, the rise and fall of EC, and the events leading up to the decimation of the comic book market. As a history of the genre, it worked really well. If I had one complaint, however, it's that too much time was spent on the 'birth' of the comic book. This isn't really a valid criticism, since the subject matter fit perfectly with the book. However, being a huge fucking nerd, I got a little tired of reading the same old anecdotes and background about MC Gaines and Famous Funnies and all that shit.
As far as history books on comics go, this was one of the best I've read. It didn't dumb down the material; it didn't feel the need to justify itself simply for existing (so many can be boiled down to "we know comics are silly and goofy and all, but in this one Batman says a bad word!"). As an overview of the era, I'd highly recommend it. If you're an asshole like Schooly that hates comics, well, I'd suggest staying away.

Fortunately, the CBH crew have managed to combine both categories into one easily-relatable location. To mix business with treasure, the CBH crew have afforded this space to live musical recordings from members of their continually-static reaching audience. For your haurrible listening pleasure, please donate your earspaces to the live sounds of the Baconstrip 3, Southern New Jersey's finest space-garage combo. This concert is the first in a projected series (though not realistically projected, mind you) and was recorded live at the Grande Fromage in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The comic in question is Josh Latta's anthropomorphic sensation, "Rashy Rabbit." Latta has been creating Rashy stories for several years now, all of which are worthy of wider attention. A stern word of warning should be administered, however, due to the graphic nature of these three individuals. Impending Video Episode Still Impending

INTERNET, Atlantic City - According to insiders at the Comic Book Haters audio podcast, the Comic Book Haters video podcast is "still right on track." The debut episode (of a proposed three part series) is set to air on local Atlantic City internet the weekend of July 4th, 2008. "It's pretty much done," says series co-host DJ Sloofus. "I mean, we kind of figured out what we're going to do. I think."
The show's resident crankmeister, Schooly G, was less optimistic: "I don't give a fuck about all this. Just go ask Sloofus." Perennial cut-up David Umbrellaman was not sought out for comment. "They didn't even bother to ask me what I thought," he was later overheard mumbling.
Although the podcast has utilized the video medium in the past, this forthcoming visual triptych embarks upon an entirely new era. "We thought the time had come," reveals Sloofus. "Plus, we got a video camera recently, and didn't really use it for much."
"I can vouch for the video camera part," confirmed G. "But as for everything else, who are you?" At this point in the interview, the proprietors politely declined our patronage, and the participants parted ways. Rashy Rabbit by Josh Latta
I really, really liked the last issue of Rashy Rabbit. I mean that; it was really good. It wasn't the end-all be-all of indie comics, but it certainly had a strong enough tie to the 'classic' modern-independent era (early 1990s). There was lots to love. This latest issue took me somewhat by surprise. It was, without a doubt, lightyears ahead of its predecessor.
If you're not a fan of hyperbole, take a walk for a few minutes. This comic deserves nothing but the utmost praise and respect. It was truly amazing. The pacing, characterization, dialogue....even the panel structure was superb. This was a Class A comic all the way.
The plot is centered primarily around Rashy Rabbit yet again, an everyman loser who's just trying to get his own. This time, however, several new characters are introduced and given their fair share of the limelight. Again, the artwork is truly fantastic. It's reminiscent of a WWII era Warner Brothers cartoon. Or, at least the comic book versions from the same era.
I think it's safe to assume that Latta will be courted by Hollywood, creating some hip children's cartoon for a trendy studio sooner or later.
This might all come across as sycophantic blabbery, but bare in mind it is one hundred percent sincere. This truly was a great comic; well, well worth the few measly dollars it costs.
